The UC Architects studio operates as a collaborative and iterative environment where ideas are tested, discussed, and carefully refined. Design is approached as a process of distillation—seeking clarity, precision, and efficiency while allowing each project to develop its own character.
Our work is guided by close attention to how spaces are used and experienced. PROFILE
Upula is a Chartered Architect with a post-charter experience of 30 + years. Following his graduation from the University of Moratuwa (1994), he left for Singapore in 1996 and had tenures of 3 years at AMC Architects and 5 years at Architects 61; the latter being one of the leading architectural practices in Singapore. During his tenure of 8 years in Singapore, he was involved in a variety of projects: apartments, shopping malls and schools, along with a mixed development project in Bandung Indonesia, a marine species displays expansion project at the Underwater World in Sentosa, a cold room warehouse for a leading supermarket enterprise and many more. Upon his return, he joined Surath Wickramasinghe Associates (SWA) and, as Director in Design, led numerous notable projects in the practice. He also partnered some of his personal projects with SWA, for which SWA contributed by providing multi-disciplinary services.
After a tenure of 12 years at SWA, Upula started his own practice and has a pool of reputed and skilled consultants of myriad disciplines e.g. Structural, MEP, Services, QS and ID, with whom he collaborates his work. He is a past pupil of Royal College Colombo, and graduated with a degree in Architecture - BSc BE (Hons), MSc (Arch) - from the University of Moratuwa. He was the first recipient of the Geoffrey Bawa Trust Overseas Travel Award and is also a qualified musician, referred to as Upula Madhushanka, in the circuit.
